ENGLISH AND HUMANITIES

Term 4 Musings

The secondary students have started off Term 4 well, and are studying hard to ensure a good outcome at the end of the year. There are only 6 short weeks left of the year and this is the time for students to focus on their work and do their best.

Physical Education

The students have been learning about playing squash, and have been receiving some coaching. Senior Constable Matt Walker has again joined us for some of our sessions, which the students enjoy.

Farming & Gardening

Nooran and Zac have been working hard on their vegetable gardens, and recently spent time turning fertilizer into the soil so that they could plant some watermelon and cantaloupe. They made a scarecrow, and were pleased to discover that we had some broody chooks sitting on eggs. It is imperative that the students now leave the chooks to do their job, and hopefully we will have chickens hatching around 28th or 29th of October.

Humanities

We are learning about politics in Humanities, and in particular our rights and freedoms as well as our civil rights. The students are enjoying learning about what they are and aren’t allowed to do, and the responsibilities that go with those freedoms. We will then move on to Economics after the Melbourne Cup break. Students will complete a project and a test this term.

English

In English, the students are reading the novel, ‘Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children’. We will also be studying the graphic novel and the film as this is a multimodal unit of work. The students enjoy this text as it is a modern novel with some fantasy themes and is an easy, enjoyable read. The students will consolidate their learning at the end of the term with an essay. It is absolutely essential that students read their novel or they will not understand the work that we are doing. By the end of week 2, they should have read up to chapter 4, by the end of week 3, they should have read up to chapter 7, and by the end of week 4, they should have finished the novel.
